Ivy League Tabs Josh Simpson as Pitcher of the Week

PRINCETON, N.J. — Sophomore Josh Simpson picked up Ivy League Pitcher of the Week honors after leading Columbia to a 2-0 victory in its Ivy League opener over Harvard Saturday. Simpson tossed a complete-game three-hitter with six strikeouts to improve to 2-0 on the season and lower his team-best ERA to 2.20.

The lefty did not allow a hit after had to work out jams in the third and fourth innings to help the Lions hang on to a 1-0 lead. In the seventh, the Crimson brought the tying run to the plate after an error but Simpson induced a foul out and fanned the next batter to preserve the win.

Additionally, first-year Liam McGill and senior Kyle Bartelman were named to the weekly honor roll. McGill, who leads the Ancient Eight and ranks 12th nationally in on-base percentage (.521), went a team-best 8-for-13 (.615) with a pair of RBI in four games. He is currently riding a streak of 16 games reaching base. Bartelman was also red-hot from the plate last week, hitting .462 with a homer, triple and five RBI.

Columbia will clash with No. 5 St. John’s Wednesday, April 5. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m. and the game can be seen live on ESPN3.
